It has only been a few months since the release of Oversteps, but as is often the case Autechre have released some additional material to accompany it. It has been released as a double-EP, one 12″ of four tracks and one of six.

These pages are no stranger to a bit of hyperbole and frankly excessive use of metaphor as part of my enthusiastic, coffee-induced ramblings. If you are at all bothered by this probably best not delve below the line, because I’m quite fond of this album. Read the rest of this entry »

This excellent 6 track EP appeared out of nowhere, well somewhere actually, and got me very excited indeed. I’ve been enjoying a lot of Olde English Spelling Bee’s haunting drone, but this is something a bit different for the label. As well as hailing from the UK rather than the US like the rest of his OESB cohorts, Forest Swords brings a much weightier and varied sound to the hauntological realm. Read the rest of this entry »

I can’t get enough of The Gaslamp Killer’s production, both All Killer and My Troubled Mind were favourites from last year, but it is difficult to concentrate on them when there appears to be a gentleman in some distress caught on the recordings.

The Bedroom Community roster would make a great five-a-side team. Ben Frost, the aggressive, maverick centre-half; Valgeir Sigurðsson keeping goal, marshalling his team from the back; Nico Muhly the prodigious, young starlet striker; Daniel Bjarnason providing a vibrant presence in midfield; leaving Sam Amidon as the roving full-back, providing casual link-up play down the wings. I couldn’t think of any new Irish releases to review on Paddy’s day but Fenn O’Berg certainly sound the part.  They are not, in fact, a ruddy-faced Irish jongleur but an endearingly juvenile pun on the names of electronic musicians Christian Fennesz, Jim O’Rourke and Mego label boss Peter Rehberg.

For a process that can seem so introverted the idea of an electronic supergroup is an odd one. It’s hardly Crosby, Stills and Nash. The idea of three men sitting on a stage behind MacBooks probably isn’t too exciting to most folk. But despite some cynicism this is an engrossing listen. Read the rest of this entry »

Grizzly Bear’s recent album was a bit of a disappointment for me; they moved away from their exercises in tone and multi-layered harmony on the excellent Yellow House into tighter, ‘song’ structures. Despite this, Veckatimest certainly had its moments and a chance to hear some live versions was more than enough of an excuse to head down to the Queen’s Hall. Read the rest of this entry »

Town or Countryside. Work or Play. Ordinary people like you and I need help. We need help to make the right decisions. Just look at these people…

She really shouldn’t go in there.

He oughtn’t to touch that.

Oh dear, they should know better than that.

What about you! Don’t you know how dangerous that is?

And him? Well its too late for him, he should have listened to the Advisory Circle. Read the rest of this entry »

(Insert 500 words of giddy hyperbole); it’s a new Autechre album. Read the rest of this entry »
